Brazilian Grand Prix – Qualifying Round-Up
Saturday 24 September 2005

Panasonic Toyota Racing endured a difficult day of qualifying for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix. Ralf Schumacher will line up on the fifth row of the grid tomorrow but Jarno Trulli will start outside the top ten for the first time in 2005 after an unfortunate day for the Italian. On a dry day at Interlagos, Jarno went out early and recorded the 8th fastest lap. But he will start ten places back in 18th due to a penalty for a precautionary engine change after a pneumatic leak in morning practice. It means Sunday's race will be hard work for Toyota but the team will still aim for more points to reduce the gap to the top three in the constructors' championship.

ADVERSE SAMBA
Ralf Schumacher had problems with understeer in qualifying, but he still put together a solid lap around Interlagos to take 10th place on the grid for tomorrow's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Ralf Schumacher (Car 17, Chassis TF105/05)
GRID: 10th
First Practice Classification: 9th
Lap Time: 1m13.908s (+1.170s)
Laps: 9
Second Practice Classification: 8th
Lap Time: 1m12.509s (+0.580s)
Laps: 18
Qualifying Classification: 11th
Lap Time: 1m13.285s (+1.297s)
Laps: 3

"That was a tough lap because I had a lot of understeer out there and it made it impossible to push as hard as I would have liked. The car had been going much better this morning and we will have to investigate exactly what changed between the two sessions. Overall it makes tomorrow a very hard proposition but we will do our best to improve our fortunes after what has been a very difficult weekend so far."

CHANGE OF PART
Jarno Trulli made the most of his tricky early qualifying slot to record the 8th fastest time of the day. But he will have it all to do in tomorrow's Brazilian Grand Prix due to a ten place penalty for a precautionary engine change this morning.

Jarno Trulli (Car 16, Chassis TF105/07)
GRID: 18th
First Practice Classification: 8th
Lap Time: 1m13.869s (+1.131s)
Laps: 12
Second Practice Classification: 13th
Lap Time: 1m13.222s (+1.293s)
Laps: 14
Qualifying Classification: 8th
Lap Time: 1m13.041s (+1.053s)
Laps: 3

"Our engine has been very reliable this year but this morning we had a pneumatic problem which we couldn't risk, so we had a precautionary change of engines. It's a pity that we will lose ten places as a penalty because we were going well this morning and we could have gone well again. The car was well balanced and the lap went well considering our fuel load and the fact that I had to go out relatively early because I had an accident in the last race. But tomorrow will now be very tough for me. Still, we will try our best to race hard and see what we can bring home. This is not the easiest circuit for overtaking but anything can happen."

BRAZIL FAULTY
After a difficult day for the team, Toyota will nevertheless push hard in tomorrow's race to try and bring home another points finish.

Dieter Gass – Chief Race Engineer
"That was obviously a disappointing qualifying result for us. Jarno did a good lap, but he is penalised ten places because of this morning's precautionary engine change so he'll be 18th on the grid tomorrow. Ralf had a lot of understeer in his lap, so he lost a lot of time from the lap time he was able to produce this morning. We don't understand yet what changed so we will have to look carefully at the data. Of course it will now be hard to get two cars into the points tomorrow but it's a long race and we never know what might happen."

Nagyon úgy néz ki, hogy eldolt az egyéni vb-cím sorsa.

Miért is?

Japanese Grand Prix – Preview
Friday 30 September 2005

With the chequered flag finally in sight on the longest season in Formula One history, Panasonic Toyota Racing is heading for its home race in Japan. The team, which has enjoyed the most successful season in its four years in the sport, will now look to cap off the year with a strong result in front of its armies of local supporters – along with the employees and executives of Toyota itself. Drivers Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher will both benefit from new specification RVX-05 engines at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. The performance step marks the end of Toyota's Formula 1 V10 development programme with the introduction of V8 units due in 2006. The dynamic driving duo will be looking to motor their way into the points in Suzuka to increase the team's 81-championship point tally and strengthen its hold on fourth place in the constructors' standings.

BACK HOME
Jarno Trulli made his debut for Panasonic Toyota Racing at last year's Japanese Grand Prix. This time he will be looking to leave with a bigger prize.

Jarno Trulli (Car 16): "Suzuka is a very good, technical circuit where set-up is even more important than usual because of the big mix of corners. We would obviously like to do well at the Japanese Grand Prix because it is the home race for our team. The Japanese fans are passionate about the sport and they really get behind you – especially when you're driving for a Japanese team. I made my debut for Toyota here last year so I've already sampled the atmosphere – although it was a strange weekend because of the weather that wiped out Saturday's qualifying. But we have come a long way since then. This year we'll go there with much higher aims, and we could even have a chance of a podium. That would be a great way to cap off an excellent season."

SCHU-ZUKA SPECIAL
Ralf Schumacher knows Japan well having raced in Formula Nippon before his arrival in F1 and he is looking forward to a return to his favourite circuit as a 'home' driver.

Ralf Schumacher (Car 17): "I am really looking forward to driving for Toyota in Japan in front of the passionate Japanese fans. Suzuka is a circuit I know well from my time racing in the country before I arrived in Formula One. It is also my favourite track on the calendar because it provides a really good mix of corners and a big challenge for all the drivers. The evidence this year shows that we go pretty well on high speed tracks so it would be great to have another strong performance here. I won the Japanese F3000 championship in 1996 so I have good memories of the country and I always look forward to my trips there. Local knowledge can also come in handy if there is a wet race as you can predict which areas of the track will dry the quickest. We will certainly be aiming to bring home some more points and who knows? Perhaps we can even make it to the podium."

EIGHT TRACK
The uniquely-shaped Suzuka track is one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar both for the drivers and the engineers who have to set up a car for every type of corner.

Mike Gascoyne – Technical Director Chassis: "Suzuka is an extremely challenging circuit, enjoyed by both drivers and engineers. It ranks alongside Spa as most people's favourite. What makes Suzuka stand out is that it contains a rich blend and mix of corners, including the fast and tricky 130R and the daunting first corner leading up to the Esses. We also have a slow hairpin and the long double-apex left-hand Spoon corner. Unlike Spa, there are no long straights so we run with fairly high levels of downforce. The only real passing opportunity can be found heading into the chicane before the end of the lap, but following a car closely through 130R is difficult, so drivers have to be totally committed to pull that off. The Japanese Grand Prix has the additional importance of being a home race for Toyota. We have a strong technical relationship with our colleagues in Japan and o all the Japanese Toyota executives and employees are keen to share the 2005 success with us all, so !
we will pull out all the stops to make a return trip to the podium."

Jerez Test Round-Up
Friday 30 September 2005

Location: Circuito Permanente de Jerez, Spain
Dates: 28-29-30 September 2005
Drivers: Ralf Schumacher (28); Jarno Trulli  (29-30); Ricardo Zonta (28-29-30).
Track length: 4.428kms

Ralf Schumacher – Chassis TF105/10
Best lap time: 1m17.603
Total laps: 88
Total distance: 389.664kms

- Ralf, what was your programme?
"I had a full session in the B specification TF105 and it was a useful day. I did almost 90 laps and got a good idea of how the car felt compared to the standard chassis."

- What were your impressions?
"The car felt good. I think it suits me better and has addressed some of the issues that I had found more difficult with the standard car during the season. That was pleasing and I will be using the car in Japan."

Jarno Trulli – Chassis TF105/10 and TF105/06
Best lap time: 1m17.047s
Total laps: 182
Total distance: 805.896kms

- Jarno, you also had an extended test with the TF105B. What did you think?
"We started off doing some set-up work and then I had a good opportunity to do the whole second and third days and carry out a good comparison.

- Have you elected to race the car in Japan?
"Yes. For me the choice was a bit more difficult because I don't necessarily get more out of the car over one lap. But, over a long run the car is more consistent, has more potential, and should prove quicker over a race distance. I will go for it also because it is the car that we are going to use in the winter tests and then as a basis for next year."

Ricardo Zonta  – Chassis TF105.5/01 and TF105/06
Best lap time: 1m17.079s
Total laps: 263
Total distance: 1164.564kms

- Ricardo, what were you concentrating on?
"I was having my first run with the V8-engined car which the team will be racing in 2006 to the new engine regulations. Then, when we had used up the V8 engine mileage on the last day, I drove the standard V10-engined TF105 to do some tyre testing for Suzuka."

- What did you think of the V8 car?
"Well, just as Olivier Panis said when he drove with the V8 engine for the first time, we have two cylinders less and therefore 20% less power, so every team and every driver is going to find the cars less challenging, because part of the reason for the new engine regulations is to stop speeds getting too high in F1. You hear people talking about the harsher vibrations of a V8 engine and so I was actually pleasantly surprised at how smooth the Toyota is. I think the engine guys have done a good job."

- How is the V8 progressing?
"It's interesting, actually. When Olivier first drove the car at Jerez he was not using the engine to its full potential because it was just a shakedown test. But even then he predicted that a 1m20s lap should be possible around Jerez with a V8 and that it would be about 2.5s slower than a V10-engined car around here. By the second day of the test, that's exactly the time I was down to, so Olivier should take up fortune-telling!"

Mike Gascoyne, Technical Director, Chassis

- What was the main thrust of the test?
"The two major programmes have been evaluation of the B-specification car with Ralf on day one and Jarno on day two and three, with a view to using it in the last two races. Ricardo, meanwhile, has been doing some work with the 2.4-litre V8 car, gathering useful engine information, and then on the last day he swapped back to a standard V10 car to do tyre evaluation for the Japanese Grand Prix."

- What was the conclusion of the test?
"Both drivers will use the B-car in Japan and China and so it's a positive outcome. All in all it was a very useful three-day test and I want to say well done to the test team for all their hard work throughout the season."

- Is there any risk involved in taking a new car to the last two flyaway races?
"There is an inherent risk with all the unknowns involved in two flyaway races, but we feel that fourth place in the constructors championship is secure after Brazil and it's unlikely that we will be able to challenge for third. So, bearing that in mind, we think it's worth taking the risk and if we get a good result in Japan maybe we might be able to push for third at the final race in Shanghai."

- Do you have a plentiful supply of parts for the TF105B?
"It will be tight but obviously we have the cars that were in Brazil and all the standard parts. If we need to revert because of something like accident damage, it will be pretty straightforward."
