Ricardo Zonta (Car 16, Chassis TF104/10B)
Session Classification: 11th, +82.531s (from race winner)
Grid: 11th
"The start was good. I just took care not to make contact with anyone because I was not sure how slippery the track would be after all the rain that we had during the morning. It was difficult to increase the temperature of the tyres at the beginning when the track was still damp. Olivier Panis (Car 17, Chassis TF104/09B)
Session Classification: DNF, +53 laps (from race winner)
Grid: 13th
"I am extremely disappointed with the outcome of today's race. I think the team made a good strategic decision to start on slick tyres despite the damp track conditions. I gained a place into the first corner, and I was racing closely with Pizzonia at the second chicane with the field very tight. I picked up a bit of understeer and ran into the back of his car, which broke my front wing. I then ended up in the gravel and my race was over. It is a real shame after what has been a difficult weekend for me."

Tsutomu Tomita - Team Principal
"That was a disappointing race for the team. We had problems on the opening lap when Olivier retired after making contact with Antonio Pizzonia's BMW-Williams. Ricardo made a good start up to tenth place, but seemed to struggle thereafter, complaining of poor grip levels. We made the decision to start on dry tyres, which was the correct choice in the improving track conditions, and it is difficult to understand why we fell back when everyone else was able to set competitive times right from the start. We lost a lot of time in the first stint, but the lap times then improved during the last two stints of the race. We now need to analyse why we were not quick enough from the beginning. We have a test in Silverstone nex                                tweek,whichisahigh-speedcircuitandonethatwillbebeneficialtoprepareourTF104BracecarforthethreeremainingracesoftheseasoninChina,JapanandBrazil.

Jarno Trulli completes Toyota's 2005 driver line-up
16 September 2004

The Panasonic Toyota Racing team has today confirmed that Jarno Trulli will join the team as a race driver from 2005. The Italian driver signed a two-year contract on Tuesday 14 September at Toyota Motorsport's headquarters in Cologne, which will see him partner German driver Ralf Schumacher from next season.

Trulli will drive a Toyota F1 car for the first time at the Silverstone Circuit in Britain today.

Jarno Trulli is one of only four drivers to have won a Grand Prix in 2004, having dominated the Monaco GP to take his debut race victory. In his eight seasons in Formula 1, Jarno has made four trips to the podium and scored two pole positions.

Toyota currently plans for Ricardo Zonta to drive the third car in Friday free practice sessions, as well as undertaking extensive test duties alongside Olivier Panis in 2005.

Ryan Briscoe will still be contracted to Toyota in 2005, but will not be a regular Panasonic Toyota Racing race or test driver. He will, however, continue to receive support from the team as he looks to find a race seat for next year.

Tsutomu Tomita - Team Principal
"It is no secret that we have been speaking with Jarno Trulli for some time about the possibility for him to join Panasonic Toyota Racing, but contrary to recent reports, we have only finalised contractual details this week. Jarno has really shown his maturity and all-round talent this season, both in qualifying and in races, and we believe that he will be the perfect team-mate to Ralf at Toyota from next season. On that note, I would like to set the record straight early and stress that there are no driver orders at Toyota; Ralf and Jarno will have equal number one status with us. We are also looking forward to Ricardo staying with the team in 2005 as our Friday driver at races. Along with Olivier, Ricardo has demonstrated a strong commitment and motivation to the team over the last two years. I firmly believe that both Olivier and Ricardo will excel in test and development roles with Toyota. With Ralf, Jarno, Olivier and Ricardo, I think that Panasonic Toyota Racing will h!
ave one of the strongest driver line-ups in Formula 1 for next season."

Silverstone Test Round-Up
Thursday 16 September 2004

Dates: 14-16 September, 2004
Location: Silverstone, United Kingdom
Drivers: Olivier Panis (14-15), Ricardo Zonta (14-15), Jarno Trulli (16), Ryan Briscoe (16)
Track Length: 5.141km

Olivier Panis
Total laps: 157
Best Lap Time: 1m17.283s
Chassis: TF104/02
"The main aim of this week's Silverstone test was to test tyres for the next races and we have prepared quite well. The weather has been very changeable, though, so that always makes it difficult to compare parts. The strong winds on Tuesday disturbed the car a lot - and when the track goes from damp to wet to dry it becomes difficult to learn anything. But we had a very positive day on Wednesday, putting in lots of laps and finding some good tyres for Suzuka. Our tyre choice for next week's inaugural Chinese Grand Prix has already been made in conjunction with our suppliers, Michelin. The track itself looks like a mix of some of the other new circuits - the set-up should be similar to what we use in Malaysia but there are also some long straights like Bahrain. It looks like a good circuit and I'm looking forward to racing there."

Ricardo Zonta
Total laps: 175
Best Lap Time: 1m17.653s
Chassis: TF104/03
"We had a successful test, working mainly on tyres for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka next month. On Tuesday the conditions were changing a lot. We had some heavy rain early in the day and that meant there was a lot of aquaplaning at certain points on the circuit. But by the time it had dried out later on we had quite a good balance in the car, even if we managed less laps than we hoped. On Wednesday the conditions changed a lot and we had to change the balance of the car again, but we still put in 129 laps of work on the tyres, while Olivier also managed over 100 laps. The specifications we have worked on for Suzuka look positive."

Jarno Trulli
Total laps: 81
Best Lap Time: 1m17.915s
Chassis: TF104/02
"I've arrived at Panasonic Toyota Racing a bit earlier than I expected, but in Formula One you have to be ready for anything, and this is what sometimes happens. The Toyota team has given me a splendid welcome and we've already started to work well together in our first day of testing. It's also nice to be working again with Mike Gascoyne, who is an excellent engineer. It's still too early to judge the car. I've found some very good, positive aspects to the package, while there are parts which can still be improved. But I think everyone in the team knows the problems which require work. All the team's drivers will work well together with the rest of the team to work on improving the car's speed for the future. There's a good atmosphere and a nice bunch of people and it's good to get started early in preparation for 2005."

Ryan Briscoe
Total laps: 82
Best Lap Time: 1m19.155s
Chassis: TF104/03
"We put in quite a standard programme of development work, looking at a number of different parts - including electronics, tyre constructions and ballast for the car. It's been nice to have Jarno here for the first time, but obviously on test days like this we are always testing different items, so I've just been concentrating on my own job. From here, I'm heading off to the Chinese Grand Prix to carry out my third driver duties. I've only been to China once before, when I raced at the Macau international F3 race last year."

Trulli első élményei a Toyotánál
írta f1-2004. sze. 17.

A 2004-es Monacoi Nagydíj első helyezett versenyzője két évre szóló szerződést írt alá a Toyota csapattal.

Grand Prix of China - Selected Preview Quotes

Ricardo Zonta - Race Driver, Car Number 16
"I am really looking forward to the Chinese Grand Prix. As a driver, it is always enjoyable to visit new tracks, and it is important to have China on the Formula One calendar. Because it is a new track, it is impossible to predict how Panasonic Toyota Racing will get on this weekend, although we will have a much better idea after free practice on Friday. During the first hour of free practice, the most important thing is to get to know the circuit and to find the limit both of the track and of the car. Judging from the circuit map, the track looks very slow. But you have to drive it before judging whether or not it is going to be fun."

Olivier Panis - Race Driver, Car Number 17
"I am very happy to be going to China. New races are always exciting, and so much will be different this time with a new country and culture to experience. Everyone in the business world looks to China and Shanghai is now one of the big business centres with a huge population. So it is good both for the image of Formula 1 to race there and for the Chinese to have such a high technology event. Before the weekend itself I'll go round the circuit with my engineer. Then I'll spend the first session on Friday just learning the track without playing about too much with the set-up. You have to find your own speed before you change something. But I'm looking forward to it because the circuit design looks really nice, but also challenging for the driver."

Ryan Briscoe - Third Driver, Car Number 38
"My work on Friday will be even more important than usual at the Chinese Grand Prix. The team will be looking for every extra little bit of detail that we can pick up. The tyre comparison will be more difficult than usual and we will not be 100 percent sure about set-up, so we might vary the set-ups on the cars to see what is best. Of course, the new circuit will be very slippery to begin with and it will improve a lot over the weekend, so we ha                                              vetokeepthatinmindaswellandseehowmuchoftheFridaydatawillbereliablefortherace.Likeeveryone,IamlookingforwardtoseeingChinaandIhopetogetoutandseeShanghaibecauseeveryonesaysit'squitespectacular.

Tsutomu Tomita - Team Principal
"China is an extremely important market for Toyota, one in which we are continuously expanding and I hope that our participation in this weekend's grand prix will be fruitful to our growth. It will give us the opportunity to demonstrate what Toyota is about as we look to increase our sales to the valued Chinese customers. Like all other F1 teams, this will be Panasonic Toyota Racing's first opportunity to visit the Shanghai International Circuit. We have no prior experience to draw on and no track data, which places more of an emphasis on Friday's practice sessions to optimise the car set-up. Quick, but efficient work will be critical, but I have complete faith in the abilities of our team and drivers to get the best performance out of our TF104B car this weekend."

Around the Shanghai International Circuit with Ryan Briscoe
"The new Shanghai International Circuit is smooth, wide, with low kerbs. Generally it looks like a high downforce circuit. There are quite a lot of slow corners and a couple of high speed corners. It looks quite a technical track so we should see some good driving.

There are also a couple of very heavy braking points that should also make racing interesting, maybe some good passing opportunities. The hairpin at the end of the back straight, turn 14, will definitely be the prime passing zone. And, while you never know until you try them out, there could also be a chance into turn 6 or even turn 11.

There are a couple of unique points about the circuit, starting with turn 1. It's unbelievable. It's a very long, long corner which almost comes full circle. You have a very fast entry at about 300kmh and brake late, taking lots of speed in. That will make it quite difficult on tyres. But the corner then starts to tighten up all the way through so you have to keep a tidy line right round to turn 2. Then it's just about trying to get the right line through the change of direction into turn 3, which is taken in first gear.

It's important to get a good exit out of turn 3 with good traction as it's a reasonable straight from turn 4 to turn 6. It's difficult to see how tight turn 4 is, so I'm not sure if it's flat. But if it's not flat it will be close to flat. Turn 5 is flat and we'll be up to sixth before heavy braking into turn 6, another slow corner. Our simulations say that it's a first gear corner, but it may prove to be possible in second.

Out of there, there's a very fast left-hander through turn 7, which is where we're going to need a lot of downforce. It's taken in fifth at a minimum of 240kmh and it looks quite a similar fast corner to turn four at Jerez. Then we have a change of direction into turn 8. There's a change of direction and it's a slightly slower, third gear corner. That sweeping section looks quite original and it looks like it could be an enjoyable section for driving, so I'm looking forward to it.

The circuit looks like it will be very wide and it looks like there could be some different racing lines and different interpretations of taking the corners - especially out of turn 8 and into turn 9. It looks like we won't be using all of the circuit out of turn 8 and setting up the car more to make sure you have a good exit out of turn 9 to take good speed through turn 10 up the straight.

Turn 11 is another slow corner which our simulation tells us will be taken in first, but may end up in second. It looks like it will be around 70kmh, similar to turn 6 and turn 3. After this tight left-hander there's a quick change of direction into a long, sweeping right-hander, turn 12.

Turn 13 is another very long corner, taking you onto the back straight, which is also very long. I'm sure there could be a lot of slipstreaming and good passing potential into turn 14, which is a very tight first gear corner taken at around 60kmh. It has a wide exit, though, from which you accelerate up to fifth before the last corner, taken in second, which puts us back on the start-finish straight."

Grand Prix of China - Free Practice Round-Up
Friday 24 September 2004

Ricardo Zonta (Car 16, Chassis TF104/10B)
First Session Classification: 10th, 16 laps completed
Lap Time: 1m36.970s (+1.601s)
Second Session Classification: 9th, 23 laps completed
Lap Time: 1m34.868s (+1.579s)

"We did a very good job today. China is a new race for Formula 1, so we had to spend some time in the first session learning the technicalities of the Shanghai circuit. The car also looks quite encouraging here and we enjoyed a trouble-free day. We did well to set the car up and to put everything together over one lap. In terms of setting up the car, we have had to find a compromise because we have a long straight, as well as slower sections, but I think we have found the best solution for this."

Olivier Panis (Car 17, Chassis TF104/09B)
First Session Classification: 13th, 14 laps completed
Lap Time: 1m37.191s (+1.822s)
Second Session Classification: 10th, 25 laps completed
Lap Time: 1m34.870s (+1.581s)

"What we did today is highly promising for the rest of the weekend. We completed our standard Friday work of evaluating tyre compounds and the Michelins look consistent and competitive, which is important for this new track. We still have some work to do, but I am still in a positive frame of mind. The circuit is fantastic, really. It is quite complicated, especially the long first corner. It took some time to find the best line and to be precise all the way through there. Everyone has done a fabulous job on this circuit and I am pleased to be here."

Ryan Briscoe (Car 38, Chassis TF104/11B)
First Session Classification: 5th, 21 laps completed
Lap Time: 1m36.394s (+1.025s)
Second Session Classification: 11th, 29 laps completed
Lap Time: 1m34.881s (+1.592s)

"That was a good opening day for us. We completed a lot of laps, which is especially critical at a new track in order to gather data. It is a very interesting circuit and our TF104B car seems to be working very well. In the first session, I was fairly comfortable with the circuit early on and I was able to get straight on with our usual tyre programme. I had a lot of fun in both practice sessions and we appear to be in good shape for the weekend."

Mike Gascoyne - Technical Director Chassis
"A good job from the whole team meant that we could work through our programme with no trouble. Of course Friday means we are focused on Michelin tyre evaluation and we can clearly see from today's running which compound is the best for us this weekend. Ricardo, Olivier and Ryan are separated by just over one-hundreth-of-a-second and generally, I think we are more competitive than we expected to be at this track. We have to ensure this trend continues for the remainder of the Chinese Grand Prix weekend."

Grand Prix of China - Qualifying Round-Up
Saturday 25 September 2004

Olivier Panis (Car 17, Chassis TF104/09B)
Pre-Qualifying: 9th
Lap Time: 1m34.153s (+0.968s)
Qualifying: 8th
Lap Time: 1m34.975s (+0.963s)
Grid Position: 8th
"I am quite happy to be eighth on the grid for tomorrow's race. With all three cars around the top ten in yesterday's free practice, we started the race weekend in a competitive way. The car has been looking consistent, although I had some trouble this morning with corner entry oversteer. We were unable to fix the problem immediately, but after the session I sat down with my engineers and checked the data. The changes we made to the car worked well for qualifying and I would like to say well done to everyone. Considering where we were this morning and where we are now, we have improved a lot. I am confident we can push hard in the race tomorrow."

Grid Position: 13th
"I do not think that final result does justice to our performance so far this weekend. The grip level was much lower in qualifying compared to this morning's practice sessions. I made a small mistake at the hairpin when I locked the front wheels, but I lost a lot of time in the final sector. I am not starting as high up the grid as I expected, but we have been quite competitive in the practice sessions, running regularly inside of the top ten, so I hope our race preparations will pay off. I have some work to do in the early stages of the race to make my way up through the field."

Mike Gascoyne - Technical Director Chassis
"Overall a very tight qualifying session. Having struggled this morning with grip levels and with the balance of his car, Olivier did a great job. I think he can be satisfied with his qualifying performance. He equals his best result of the season, which incidentally was in Bahrain, the other new circuit on this season's calendar, and also Indianapolis. Ricardo was happier in the free practice sessions this morning, but a mistake under braking into turn ten on his qualifying lap cost him several tenths-of-a-second. The car has been strong over the long runs and we are confident of our race pace. However, it would have been nice to have both cars starting from the top ten, which should have been possible today."

Laco 73 :D
